Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young kid. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was in college when she became interested in production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury and look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like Urban Beauty Collective.
